Wissenschaftliche Kurzbiographie
Manfred Burianek ist Mineraloge und Kristallograph mit Forschungsschwerpunkten in der Kristallzüchtung, Strukturchemie und physikalischen Charakterisierung funktioneller anorganischer Einkristalle. Seine Arbeiten verbinden präparative Kristallzüchtung mit Röntgen- und Neutronenbeugung, Spektroskopie sowie Untersuchungen elastischer, ferroelektrischer, optischer und magnetischer Eigenschaften. Seine Dissertation an der Universität zu Köln befasste sich mit der Einkristallzüchtung und Charakterisierung von Bor-Sillenit Bi24B2O39.
Zentrale Materialsysteme seiner Forschung sind Bismutoxide und mullitartige Verbindungen wie Bi2Ga4O9, Bi2Fe4O9 und Bi2Mn4O10 sowie tetragonale Wolframbronzen des Calcium-Barium-Niobat-Systems. Die Arbeiten umfassen Phasengleichgewichte, Hochdruck- und Hochtemperaturkristallographie, Relaxor-Ferroelektrizität, inkommensurable Modulationen und Neutronenuntersuchungen.
Ein weiterer Schwerpunkt betrifft optische Materialien und die quantitative Beziehung zwischen chemischer Zusammensetzung und Brechungsindex. Dazu gehören das Programm POLARIO und Arbeiten zur Bestimmung refraktometrischer Daten von Mineralen. Darüber hinaus umfasst das Werk gemmologische und archäometrische Beiträge zum Edelsteinbesatz des Dreikönigenschreins im Kölner Dom und zur historischen Bergkristallverarbeitung.
